Insy winsy spider

On Friday Elias "walked" with his little push car for the first time. When I have put him in front of it before he has always gone down on his knees and tried to suck the handle. But now he does actually take a few steps with it! Very exciting.

Yesterday we had some great weather and we spent a lot of time in the garden weeding. Elias still is a bit suspicious of the "great outdoors" and when put on a blanket he just sits there. Quite nice for us though, we can actually get some work done and not chase him around the garden. ;-)

Elias likes the swing now by the way, and this is how cute he is sitting in it!

Yesterday we had a bit of drama here in the house. A towel had been hanging out on the terrace and we had brought it in. Elias was sitting next to it and all of a sudden Dave shouted "oh my god". On the towel was a huge spider, the biggest I have ever seen in Sweden. My hero Dave managed to kill it and we could all relax. I wonder if the climate change have anything to do with the size of that bugger... Bloody global warming!

I hope you have seen the new photo album - April & May..

Driving drama

Another week is coming to an end and it has been a really nice one. On Monday we went to the open nursery, on Tuesday we met up with Lisa and Theo and went for a walk in the sunshine. On Wednesday we went to Uppsala to meet the people form our parent group. We went for a walk around an outdoor zoo and had lunch together. It was great to see them all.
Unfortunatelly we had a bit of bad luck on the way home. North of Stockholm the road got congested and after a while I realised we weren't moving at all. I phoned David to find out what was going on and after a while he had found out that there had been an accident and the road was actually closed off a bit ahead of us. Elias had been asleep up until now but after a while of standing still he woke up and quite soon he was getting very upset. The traffic was hardly moving at all but after maybe 40 minutes we had gotten to the next exit and I managed to get off the motorway. Dave agreed to quit work early, take the train to Solna (where we were stuck) and we would try to find another route home. Luckily I had a bit of extra food for Elias so he was ok. We did manage to get home in the end but what normally take 1 hour had taken us 4... I really hate bad traffic and with a baby in the car it's just a nightmare..

Sunshine and shopping

We have had a very nice weekend, on Saturday our friends Pelle and Sofia came around with their baby daughter Maja, 10 weeks. She was so small and cute. Elias behaved like a star and showed off his crawling and standing skills.

We had been told the weather would be nice this weekend but the Saturday was quite cloudy, but on Sunday we had great weather. I spent most of the day shopping though, a bit of bad timing but it had to be done! I managed to find quite a lot of the things I wanted and Dave and Elias had had a nice time together. Apparently Elias had actually liked to go on the swings in the park. When we have tried before he hasn't liked it which has been a bit of a shame. In the afternoon we also took him outside to play on the lawn. We were a bit worried about all the stuff he would probably try to eat, but it turned out that he was very sceptical about the grass. He didn't move at all and as soon as his fingers touched the grass he shivered with discomfort. I guess it was a bit new and strange to him. He will probably like it soon and start munching on the grass and dirt...

Quick Note

I thought I would do a quick post, mainly to shock Vickan.

Not much to report except that I am getting nervous about my paternity leave. It is relentlessly drawing closer and closer like a steamroller. But believe it or not I am looking forward to it too. Elias is a lovely boy and fun to be with. He has a good sense of humour when he is not hungry. It is funny when he wants to play "chase". Somehow he manages to tell me he wants to play without words. He starts to crawl away, then turns back toward me grinning and silent. Then he creeps forward a little more and then looks back again. Then I start to crawl after him making growling sounds and he squeals and giggles and starts trying to get away.

Yesterday we had a deer in our back garden. I could not get the camera in time unfortunately. Vickan thinks the deer will steal all our apples later in the year.

The other day I saw a woodpecker pecking in the tree just a few metres from our back door. I failed to get to the camera in time then as well, so you'll just have to believe me!

10-month checkup

Today we have been to the clinic for Elias' 10-month check-up. They measured and weighed him as usual but also had a doctor checking a few medical things and if he is developing like he should.

Everything was fine. Heart and lungs sounded fine, his belly was ok and hips and joints were good to. She checked if he masters the pincer grip (which he does) and if he bangs two blocks together. The banging took a while for him to show, he just wanted to throw the blocks on the floor ;-) He did show off banging blocks together before we left so she was pleased. I asked if we should worry about the fact that he still doesn't roll over when he is on his back but the doctor thought nothing of it since he both crawls and stands up against furniture and tries to walk alongside them.

Another thing he has started to do lately is to clap his hands and wave. Extremely cute of course! If we have the telly on and there is clapping he joins in!

Garden work

At Easter we got quite a lot of snow, enough for David to build a snow man (or a replica of one of the soldiers in the terracotta army?)

We had almost a week of proper winter and a few days it was really cold, I think the coldest we had was -13 during the night. At the end of last week it started thawing and by the weekend all snow was gone and it was really warm and sunny. On Saturday Dave went grocesry shopping with Elias on his own (a practice run) and in the afternoon Anna and Jacob came round for a visit. It was so nice to see them. We do miss all our friends in Uppsala!

On Sunday I was tempted to go into town and have a fika with my cousin but the weather was so nice so I decided to take the opportunity to do some garden work. Therese actually came here and helped too! ;-) We pruned the apple tree - loads of fun!! Not that we really knew what we were doing, but I think we did a good job. I do think a few more brances need to be chopped off though.. We also raked quite a lot of leaves while Dave took care of Elias and served us lunch on the patio for the first time.. Unfortunatelly we didn't take a before and after picture of the tree, but here is a picture of Dave's melted snow soldier and in the background is the tree before the pruning. I will make sure to take an after picture soon (as I am sure you are all Very interested)

Since the last entry me and Elias have also met up with my friend Lisa and her 4 week old boy Theo. Lisa and I got to know each other -98 in Stuttgart when we were both exchange students and since then we have been in touch on and off. When I sent out our new address to my whole address book she replied and it turns out she lives about 1.5 km from here!! It is great to be in touch with here again, just a shame I am soon going back to work! It is amazing to see Theo and think that Elias was that small once.. Hard to believe..

Happy Easter!!

First of all we want to apologise for the delayed blog entry. Somehow the days just rush past and all of a sudden a week have went past without us reporting about our life in the new house..

As we said in the previous entry we have had a few over night guests already. The first one was of course my dad who was here to help with the move. THANK YOU!! We also almost went to a friends party and left Elias with a babysitter. The plan was that my cousin Therese and her boyfriend Michael were going to babysit so we invited them over a few days before the big day for a bit of a test run. Elias had been a bit poorly the night before but had seemed ok during the day so we thought it would be ok. When they were here he did a super violent puke though and the next day both David and Michael fell ill. So much for that night out. Dave was too ill to go to a party and we had given the babysitter a stomach bug.. Oh well. The next weekend Therese offered to babysit again (to our surprise!) so we went shopping for a few hours during the day. We did an IKEA run and bought quite a lot of stuff, we just about managed to fit it into the car. Among other things we bought a new sofa bed for the guest room and a few days later Luke and Yoko came for a quick visit and were the premiere guests in the guest room.

Last Wednesday my cousin Erika came for an over night visit and on Thursday Angelika and the dogs came to spend Easter with us. We have been quite busy as you can see... Easter has been really lovely. It has snowed a couple of days and on Friday we first had a bit of a snow storm but in the afternoon the sun came out. Yesterday and today the sun has been shining and it has been really beautiful with the snow, unfortunately it has been a bit windy so it hasn't been that nice to go for long walks but I guess you can't get everything...

Anki and the dogs have gone back home now and I am sure Elias miss his auntie and "cousins". She got to be around for the second tooth starting to sprout and also to see him drag himself up to standing against the coffee table. I have tried to catch his tooth in a picture and this is the closest I have gotten. Can you see tooth no 1?

He also does a bit of "walking" with the use of a basket turned upside down as support. It will be interesting to see when he starts walking around the coffee table and such. Apparently that is one of the things they check for in the 10-month checkup.

We are online!!!!!

Yipeeeeeeee!

Tonight we have finally gotten our modem installed and we are back in cyberspace. I have spent the last hour going through my very full inbox. Oh how I have missed my emails!! ;-)

There are a few different reasons why it has taken us so long to get this working but one of the worst cock ups is that the company managed to send the modem to an address we lived on 4 years ago!! (Norrtäljegatan) Very strange/BAD.

I still have quite a few emails to go through but we will try to write a proper entry and post some pictures during the weekend. A quick recap of what has happened since the move comes here:

* Elias started crawling
* Elias got his first tooth
* Elias started "talking" (bababababa)
* Dave did a first "repair" on the house
* My cousin babysat for Elias
* We had our first over night guests

The big move

We have done it we have moved. I say "we", but I ,Dave, actually went to work on the move day, a strange decision perhaps. Vickan and Stig handled everything, but we had hired a removal company who were excellent. They arrived at 7.45 am and were finished by lunchtime. It cost us about 6500 SEK but it was worth every öre.

When we first got to the house, the old owners had left us a bottle of bubbly wine and a note welcoming us. They also left a bunch of useful stuff behind, like gardening equipment, a trampoline(!), and nice wooden cupboard, a high pressure water cleaner among others. It is good to know we have such nice people as our predecessors.

We slept in our new home for the first time last night, and Elias slept in his own room for the first time, meaning that we could talk and move and read without worrying about waking him up. He slept pretty well in there we think.

Now come the weeks of living in a mess. But it will be fun to get everything how we like it in the home.

Started packing

On Friday morning we signed the contract so now we can start to look forward to the move. We are using a moving firm which of course will cost a bit but it will be worth it. We have started packing now so the flat is a total mess. Boxes and stuff everywhere..

Everything that fits in a box should be put in a box

Bidding is over

The bidding for the flat is now over and tomorrow we are signing the contracts. We're very pleased with the amount we are getting (1.720.000 sek = £135.400) but we will not celebrate until the contract is actually signed. The flat started at 1.450.000 so it went up a lot, a lot more than we had expected or hoped for. We were lucky to have a few bidders that were really keen to get the place. I am very curious to see who has bought our beloved flat. I do hope they are good people that will treat the place nicely. ;-)

So at the moment we are this happy:

Bid time

The bidding for the flat has started now. It was a bit of a slow start but then one bidder made a big raise. Hopefully someone will follow.. If not we are quite happy with the top bid right now.. Here you can see the bidding online.. Just click on S:t Olofsgatan 60A and you will see the bids.

I have fed Elias avocado for the first time today. I can't say he looked that impressed. He ate about a quarter of the avocado and with every spoon he made a "why are you feeding me this??"-face. It probably didn't help that I laughed at him ;-)

Had him weighed and measured today. See in the top right corner for the new data.

Food and drink

I guess you all know that our little boy has a good appetite and here are a few pictures of him in action eating his favourite snack "majskrokar" (corn hooks).

Yum... Corn hooks.... Mmmm

They make me quite thirsty though...

The showing of the flat yesterday went well by the way. On Saturday we were a bit worried because the weather was horrid but on Sunday it was a beautiful day, the sun was actually shining. About 25 couples came to the showing and 10 signed the "interest list". There is a second showing on Tuesday and on Wednesday the bidding starts.. We are quite nervous!!

Crawl bootcamp

Today we have had a fun filled (ha!) day of cleaning. Tomorrow at 3 pm is the showing of the flat and we are trying our best to make it look nice. In fact it probably looks better than ever tomorrow. Typical.. Anyway, hopefully a lot of people will come and make loads of bids. Here you can see our flat online. Click on the text "Visa samtliga bilder i stort format" to see more pictures. (The link will only work until the flat is sold, so hopefully not much longer... )

Apart from cleaning we have also played a lot with Elias and tried to get him to crawl. He still can't do it but he seems to be getting closer and closer. To the right you can have a guess on when you think he will master the skill of crawling.

Look at daddy. Stand on your hands and knees..

There we go! Now you just have to learn to move forward.

No tooth, no crawl

After the fever Elias got a bit of an upset stomach for a few days but now he is well again. We thought he might be getting a tooth because he had the fever and the bad stomach but no. He is still a toothless boy... While he had his upset stomach we fed him blueberries which looked a bit funny...

It feels like a very exciting time now with loads happening. Elias is getting more and more mobile even though he is still not crawling. We can see that he is really trying
and he quite often gets frustrated when he can't get to a toy he is reaching for. A few of the babies in the parent group are crawling now and it looks like so much fun. Because Elias is quite big I guess it might take him a bit longer to get the hang of crawling but I hope he gets there soon. Mind you, if he takes after me he won't crawl at all. I just sat on my bum and used my legs to pull myself forward. Hard to explain but very efficient!

Anyway, this blog isn't about me.. ;-) Here are a few pictures of what he looks like attempting to get places.
From sitting he stretches and stretches until he finally flips over to his stomach. There he sometimes lifts up his bum and rocks a bit but usually he gets frustrated after a few seconds. If he goes anywhere it is usually backwards...

He does manage to move short distances but he hasn't worked out a technique for it so it is more chance when he gets somewhere. And quite often he gets stuck in a corner or something.

Happy New Year!!!

Christmas up in Luleå was very nice even though the weather let us down a bit. The first week Elias and I was there it was above 0 degrees every day. Luckily not all snow melted and by the time Dave, Joyce and Max came it had gotten a bit colder as well. On Christmas Eve we went to my aunts summer house and had a great time. Glögg, food and Santa. Unfortunatelly Elias had to go to bed before Santa came, but he got his presents anyway. We were a bit chocked at the amount of presents he got - Thank you everone!!!

On the 29th we drove back south again. We decided to go during the night and it turned out to be the right decision. Elias slept the whole way! Dave was a hero and drove the whole way, I offered to drive too but I guess he was in "the zone" and didn't want to give up the steering wheel. We arrived about 2.45 in the morning so the next day was a bit tough but ok.

On New Years Eve we went round to our friends Anna and Patrik and their little boy Jacob. There was another family there as well, Magnus, Maria and Jolin. We had a really nice evening and stayed until 1.30. I wanted to stay longer but next day I was glad that we left when we did. ;-)

The new year hasn't started great though I must say. Elias got a fever a few days ago and has been pretty poorly. Now he is better although he still has a slight temperature. He has slept loads and hardly eaten anything (he has been drinking water though). Times like these it is nice to have a big and chubby baby, it doesn't matter so much then if he eats less for a few days.

On Monday Dave goes back to work and it will be quite a big change for me. Since December 16th I haven't been on my own with Elias!

Almost Christmas

Tomorrow Elias and I fly up to Luleå. I can't believe it is almost Christmas! December has just flown by. I guess we have been pretty busy organising the buying of the house and the selling of the flat. We chose between two estate agents and decided to go with one that was a bit more expensive but that seemed to be better. To start with they wanted 4% but Dave said we would only go with them for 3.75% and they agreed. Then when I was there to sign the contract the guy all of a sudden said "oh, the fee is wrong, we decided 3.5% right!?". I didn't disagree! So now we are actually getting the same price as with the cheaper estate agent. We will have the public showing in January and hopefully we will get a nice wad of money for the flat, unfortunately prices have dipped a bit lately.. We will do a bit of "styling" to make it look better and paint one ceiling that looks a bit tatty. I have been wanting to paint it for years; shame we didn't do it earlier so we could enjoy it as well.

So, tomorrow Elias and I go to Luleå. There is snow there but at the moment the temperature is +1 (we have -5!), hopefully it will get colder soon again. I think Elias is quite excited to get a visit from Father Christmas and hopefully get a few new toys. At the moment his favourite toy is a ladle, poor deprived child.

I also have to show you this lovely picture before logging off for a feww weeks, isn't he the cutest?

New Old House

Yes, as Viktoria said we have signed on the line for a new house. It cost a mind-blowing amount of money but some friends have commented that we got it cheap. It is pink and not that big, but we think it has some character. It was built in 1951, the same year as my mum (was born not built). It has a cellar, which they simply just don't build anymore (for good reason unfortunately, they are prone to moisture). It has a small garden too, hopefully big enough for a Kubb match in the summer, and maybe Elias and I will be able to practice our keep-me-ups out there.

It all began last weekend. We decided to sacrifice poor Elias' baby swim class because it was our last chance to go house hunting this year. We went to three "visnings" (public showings of the homes before the bidding process begins), one in North Stockholm and one in the South. The first in the North was a no-no. Like so many others we've seen it was loads worse than the published photographs on line. The second house was in quite a quiet green area that felt like it was miles from the city. It was nice, one of the best we've seen, semi detached. We were put off perhaps sillily by the cold floors underfoot downstairs. By the final house poor Elias was nearly at the end of his tether, but we ploughed on. We both liked the house straight away although I was more enamoured than Vickan. The selling point for me were the lovely warm floors in the basement, which were heated. We had our usual whispered conversion to each other to decide what we would pay for the house and agreed on 3.7 million.

We thought we'd give the bidding a go for this house, mainly for practice, we did not expect to get it because there were many other wealthy looking speculators at the visning whispering excitedly to each other. The bidding lasted over two days. Bidder 1 opened on the asking price of 3.2 million. We were the next bidders and we didn't mess around and layed 3.3. I knew bidder 3 were real players when they took it straight to 3.4. We were quickly running out of playing room since 3.7 was our limit. Then bidder 4 came in with a laughable attempt to get the house for 3.425. Bidder 3 quickly cut them down to size taking it to 3.5. The last bidders, number 5 also tried the same trick, showing their poor grasp at bidding psychology with a paultry 3.525. Bidder 3 quickly snapped back with a bid for 3.6. Then Vickan played her master stroke (who I should add was giving all our bids to the estate agent). She took it up to 3.7 just before bidding closed for the day. Getting in the last bid of the day is a great strategy (we thought) because it forces everyone else to think carefully about their bids. While the bidding is happening, it is all too easy to have an emotional rather than a rational response to another bidder's bid - you are tempted to bid on just to win the game rather than because you really want the house!

Anyway our trick nearly worked because the next morning the two weak bidders (4 and 5) dropped out. The agressive bidders (3) bided their time. We sensed it was not over simply because they had not dropped out. Bidders 1 had perhaps gone on holiday because we hadn't heard a peep from them since the opening bid. Time passed and just when we thought we may have got the house bidders 3 struck with a 3.75. Still a strong bid, but less agressive. Clearly we were finally converging on the true value of the house. Then we had a crisis of confidence. We had only planned to go to 3.7 but it did not feel good to let 3 have it for a mere 3.75. We had a signed letter from the bank saying we could spend up to 3.8. I was very keen on the house and wanted to make the bid of 3.8, vickan was not so sure. I managed to persuade her, one of my arguments being that I thought there was at least an 80% chance of bidder 3 topping 3.8 anyway, and it would be a shame not to at least try. Anyway in the end we made our 3.8 bid, but a lot of time had passed possibly giving away to the opposition our weakness. A swift bid would have hidden the fact that 3.8 was our limit. And sure enough, without much delay, bidders 3 brushed us aside with the final decisive bid of 3.85 million crowns. It was a bit disappointing but at least we'd tried and I think played our cards the best we could. I had a feeling however that it was not over.

That was wednesday. On Friday Vikoria got a call from the agent, bidders 3 had pulled out of the deal. Apparently they had been bidding on two places all along and had chosen the other place. Maybe if we hadn't made our 3.8 bid, they would have chosen our house for 3.75. So anyway we got the house. We had already decided that if this situation arose we would offer 3.7 million instead of our 3.8 bid. We could have offered less, but we thought then it would be tempting for the sellers to start the whole process afresh. As for bidders 3 - that behaviour is frustrating, although you can't really blame people for doing it if it maximises their chances of getting the place that want - it is not against the rules. Of course it should be against the rules because the practice of making phoney or hollow bids artificially fuels the prices to rise higher.

That's not quite the end of the story. It was not happily ever after because Vickan had serious doubts about the house through Saturday. Suddenly everything about it was wrong - it was too much money, our current home is too good to leave, we won't know anyone, there was nowhere to keep the pram. These were all genuine worries that I shared although I kept trying to convince her anyway because I thought it was a too good opportunity to miss. Anyway, I finally managed to drag us to the signing of the contract on Sunday, and things immediately felt more positive. The existing owners turned out to be really nice and they agreed to let us come back with them to show us personally around their home. After that things seemed much better, and now we can't wait to move in!

You can see some pics of the house here
